Government Issue (often just G.I., and frequently spelled in all-lower-case) was formed in 1980 in the midst of the emerging Washington, DC hardcore scene. Originally signed to Ian Mackay's Dischord Records, G.I., is regarded as one of the early pioneers of American punk. Many early songs were straightforward hardcore, clocking in at under the one minute mark, but they later progressed into a more melodic song-focused outfit (citing The Damned as key to gaining this catchy sound) and often with lyrics critical of the short-sighted behavior of the scene they aided in creating. In 2008, the band signed with DC-Jam Records for an EP live release titled The Punk Remains the Same which is available in both CD and colored vinyl format. |
